Language Difference or Learning Difference?
This two-part workshop series is designed for literacy specialists, TESOL teachers, special education teachers, classroom teachers, content specialists, principals, and special services staff. Part 1: Understanding Second Language Acquisition & the Role of Tier 1 In the first session, participants will acquire a functional understanding of second language acquisition. This session will focus on the role of Tier 1 instructional strategies and data collection. Part 2: Identifying and Addressing Learning Differences in Multilingual LearnersThe second session focuses on facilitating both quantitative and qualitative conversations with colleagues when a multilingual learner demonstrates perceived learning difficulties. Participants will learn to collect appropriate data to support these conversations, avoiding assumptions of a learning disability by understanding the risk indicators of a developmental language disorder. The workshop will guide attendees in developing or revising a system that indicates data to collect in Tier 1 when an ML student begins experiencing academic or linguistic challenges. Additionally, the session will emphasize recognizing multilingualism as an asset to the student, classroom, and community.By the end of this series, participants will be better equipped to distinguish between language differences and learning differences through collaboration, leading to more informed and effective support for multilingual learners.
