Empowering Experienced MLs: Strategies for Long-Term Academic Success [In-person]
In this workshop, secondary teachers will learn practical strategies to support the unique needs of experienced multilingual learners (MLs) as they progress through content-rich courses. We’ll focus on ways to design equitable assessments, write objectives that integrate content with academic language, make lessons comprehensible, and structure engaging opportunities for speaking and writing. With an asset-based approach, this workshop highlights strategies to build on MLs’ strengths, support academic growth, and foster success in every content area. Each session will include actionable tasks and resources to apply in your classroom right away. This workshop combines microlearning, collaborative discussions, and hands-on application to ensure that participants gain practical, immediately applicable strategies. Throughout the day, you’ll engage with short, focused learning modules that introduce key concepts, followed by breakout sessions where you can collaborate with peers to deepen understanding and brainstorm classroom applications. Each module includes an application task to help you integrate new strategies directly into your teaching practice, with opportunities to share and receive feedback. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a toolkit of high-leverage techniques to support your experienced multilingual learners effectively.
