Home Visiting - Supporting Families Affected by Substance Use Disorder (SUD)
This course equips participants with essential knowledge and skills to support individuals and families impacted by substance use disorders. It covers the factors contributing to addiction and how these disorders impair decision-making.Key topics include the relationship between substance use and mental health disorders, risk identification through screening tools, and the stigma that creates barriers to treatment.Emphasizing self-reflection, participants will examine their own implicit biases and the impact of their beliefs on interactions with affected families. By the end of the course, participants will be prepared to provide compassionate and effective support to those in need.
Objectives (appears on the evaluation form):

1.    Have a basic understanding of the factors that contribute to addiction and how substance use disorders impair thinking and decision making.

2.    Be aware of concurrent mental health disorders and other stressors and their potential relationships to problematic substance use.

3.   Know about screening tools that may be used to identify risk of substance use. 

4. Be aware of the stigma that those with substance use disorders often face, and understand that the resulting feelings of shame present barriers to treatment and recovery.

5. Explore and acknowledge your own implicit bias and the effects your beliefs have on your relationship with a family affected by a substance use disorder.
