Home Visiting - Communicating With Families
Welcome to "Communication with Families"! This course is designed to enhance your skills in building strong, collaborative relationships with families through effective communication. In Part 1, we will explore home visiting practices that foster partnerships, setting the foundation for meaningful interactions. Part 2 focuses on the core principles of effective communication, while Part 3 highlights the qualities of home visitors that promote family engagement. In Part 4, you’ll learn strategies for getting to know families deeply, and in Part 5, we’ll discuss how to share important information effectively. Part 6 introduces motivational interviewing techniques to support families in achieving their goals, and Part 7 prepares you to approach difficult conversations with confidence and sensitivity. Together, these topics will equip you with the tools and knowledge to support and empower the families you work with.
Objectives (appears on the evaluation form):

After successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Explain the elements of a true partnership.
  2. Be aware of home visitor qualities associated with higher parent engagement.
  3. List your own strengths and areas that may need strengthening.
  4. Reflect on the communication strategies you are currently using and those that might be useful to try.
  5. Examine the ways you are currently sharing information and take steps to broaden your repertoire to meet individual family's needs.
  6. Analyze the way Motivational Interviewing (MI) work and interpret its benefits for both families and home visitors.
  7. Address challenging topics with families by identifying common ground and working in partnership with them.
