Thinking Beyond the Core Four: Trauma-Informed Functional Behavior Assessments
Attendees will briefly review the history and origins of functional behavior analysis, and explore recent paradigm shifts in addressing challenging behaviors with relational and/or neuroscience approaches. Similarities and differences between the “core four” and more relational views of behavior function (e.g., the sequence of engagement) will be explored, with particular emphasis on what each stakeholder brings to the table (e.g., student, staff, parents/caregivers). Lastly, we will find ways that the six principles of trauma-informed care (e.g., safety, trustworthiness & transparency, peer support, collaboration & mutuality, empowerment, voice & choice, cultural humility) can be utilized to develop and support a more trauma-informed FBA process.
