UPLIFT: Fostering a Sense of Safety in Schools
In this module, participants will learn about the key components of physical and psychological safety to identify ways to strengthen these critical domains of well-being for students, staff and families. A review of the stress response, its relationship to feelings of safety, and its impact on our availability to new learning, problem-solving, and self-regulation will be provided. Participants will reflect on traditional practices targeting physical safety in schools (e.g., active supervision, predictability and routines, fire drills, lockdowns), and expand their understanding of a safe, trauma-informed environment. Participants will engage in discussions and activities that explore how routines, norms, consistency, and predictability can help build a sense of safety for students and staff alike. Participants will learn the key components of psychological safety, with a specific focus on the sequence of engagement, including co-regulation and relationship building. Actions and practices that school leaders and staff can use to increase physical and psychological safety will be identified. Utilizing a case study, participants will explore how to replace less effectivenegative consequences with natural consequences and/or restorative practices that moresustainably establish feelings of safety for students, staff and families.
